Members of the Bridgewater Community Lions (BCLC), the Cub Club, and the Greater Bridgewater Leos Club got together this past Saturday and drove to Weymouth in order to clean, read, and catalogue over 200 pairs of eyeglasses which had been previously collected. The organizer of the event was Robin Piccini, a member of the Bridgewater Community Lions. “We had lots of fun on Saturday. Now that everyone feels comfortable reading glasses [with a lens analyzer]; we should be able to read 120 an hour. It was fun watching the kids pick up on it so fast.”
This was our first project to support Make a Difference Day. Thanks to Eye Health Associates of Weymouth who donated the use of the space and equipment in order to allow us to complete this project. The BCLC and the Leos will continue to collect eyeglasses for future “eyeglass reading parties”.

Designed to encourage youth to serve in their community, the awards are presented to young people who complete 50 or 100 hours of community service in a 12-month period. The local Lions Young Leaders in Service Awards recipients are:
Gold Seal Awards for 100 Hours of Service
Peter Bertelli of Middleboro
Silver Seal Awards for 50 Hours of Service
Brian Davis of Bridgewater
Michael Shalginewicz of Bridgewater
The awards will be presented during the 15th Annual Bridgewater Academy Lions Club Cable Auction, on November 11th, at 5:00PM on BTV9. Each recipient will receive a letter and certificate from the President of Lions Clubs International.
“Lions believe it is important for young people to experience the rewards of helping their community,†says District 33S Youth Outreach Coordinator Martin Middleton. “Young people who volunteer become adults who serve, and service is the primary focus of Lions clubs. In fact, ‘We Serve’ is our motto.â€
The Greater Bridgewater Leos Club worked with the Bridgewater Academy Lions Club to recruit participants and coordinate the award application process. Bridgewater Academy Lions Club extends appreciation to the adult leader who assisted with the awards program: Sharon Audette.
